Happy New Year 2016!

It is snowing here, again, in the Rocky Mountains. Our Steamboat ski area has seen 185 inches of snowfall this season. For a short stretch of days in December, I was shoveling twice a day. Good grief. I hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday season. I've enjoyed my time off to be in my studio and am finishing up projects and prepping for my busy 2016 workshop schedule. I enjoy living in Colorado, but I must add that it will nice to visit sunshine and green grass in February -- I'm running of space to put the snow from my driveway!

Coast-to-Coast February Events

Next month I'll literally be teaching coast-to-coast! For the first weekend in February, I'll be in Southern California for two guild workshops and lectures. The first group is the Friendship Quilters in Poway where I'll conduct a two-day hand applique workshop at Paradise Sewing and present my lecture to the guild Monday night, February 8. The next day I'll be in Temecula, California, for a visit with my dear friend Elvia and a presentation at Valley of the Mist quilt guild, teaching a class in machine applique. This has fast become one of my most popular classes. It's been fun rediscovering my invisible machine applique process. My students have really enjoyed the class as they have a finished block by the end of the class day. Here's a detail image of the class project. (Yes, all the of pieces have been stitched in place by machine!)

My West Coast adventure will be followed by a trip to the central US and the Village Guild of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest in Illinois (Feb. 16 and 17). Less than a week later, I'll be in Florida for the inaugural Daytona Beach QuiltWeek presented by American Quilters Society.

For all of my friends in Florida, one of my Daytona Beach workshops (machine quilting) is already full, so register now! I'll also be teaching classes in machine applique and precision machine piecing. Click the AQS button on the front page of my website for information about my class offerings, and then visit the AQS QuiltWeek website to register online. I'm thrilled to be presenting a "Special Event" on Friday evening, February 26 -- a lecture/digital slideshow of my quilts. Book your room at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort now! Special AQS rates for the event expire January 24! If you live in snow country like me (and are getting a little cabin fever from all the white stuff), this is a Paducah-caliber show on a BEACH!

Retreat Workshops

Weeklong quilting retreats are more popular than ever! You get to spend a week with one instructor, have your room and meals all prepared, make new friends, and stay in a spectacular location! What could be a better getaway? Treat yourself this year. A good many of students are making these retreats an annual tradition. Just ask a quilter who has been to the Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California! And, yes, I'll be at "Asilomar" again this year (my class is only a few students shy of being sold out). I have five spots available for the Quilting Adventures retreat at the Embassy Suites near San Antonio, Texas, in March. This will be my first year teaching for QA, and they have been very professional and very-well organized. I can't wait!

I am also very excited about going to the Tanque Verde Ranch in Arizona in April. This event is being organized by the Madeline Island School of the Arts in Wisconsin. I know, it seems odd that the Arts School on an island in the Great Lakes region would host an event in Arizona. But again, leaving the ice and snow for a retreat in the southern part of the country is what it's all about! Join me for a week-long applique retreat April 18 to 22 in Tucson. Hurry, there is space still available.

Speaking of MISA, in October I'll be back on Madeline Island. A friendly staff, a great classroom, and bottomless cookie jars ... what could be better amenities for a week-long workshop? Click here for more about MISA: Madeline Island School of the Arts.

In early November, Art Quilt Tahoe will, once again, be underway. Great classroom space, delicious meals and a beautiful setting. I am thrilled I was invited back again this year to teach. Students have the option of enrolling in my workshop for five or seven days! You won't be disappointed, it's a terrific venue. Check it out here: Art Quilt Tahoe.

Silver Fox Inn Workshop

Registration for my retreat workshop in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, at the Silver Fox Inn is now open! The online registration form is available on my website: Register Now. This year's dates are September 12-17, and enrollment is limited to 15 students. The $999.00USD rate for the week (six days, five nights) includes a shared room, all meals and the class. Private rooms are also available. Registration opened last week and the response has been quite steady. For more information about the workshop, follow this link - Silver Fox Inn.

See you soon!

That's all the news for now. I keep my online calendar as up-to-date as possible, so I hope to see you at an event soon.

Until next time,
David
